HOMEWORK FOR WEEK #1

• Read:  Chapter 1 - in Terry Barrett “About Art Criticism,”
Ch.1 – Barrett à “About Art and Criticism” 
Art critics are enthusiastic about art - generally writing about work that one likes & informing the public about that art
Critics put art into a context:  social, does some of the homework for the reader
They write speculatively waiting for the realization because are is purposefully challenging
What DOES THE CRITIC DO:
-Adds credibility to the artists and their art ($values$$)
-  Adds social context
-  Another way of viewing the work
They tells us why art matters

HISTORY:  Giorgio Vasari = Father of Art Criticism (1550’s, Raphael and Michelangelo)…
                  Denis Diderot,  Charles Baudelaire,  Clement Greenberg,  Lawrence Alloway
                  Hilton Krammer.  Arlene Raven,  Lucy Lippard
